A Lenten Devotion for Wednesday, March 5

Matthew 20:18-19

“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

Jesus knew his fate, and knew it from the very beginning. He walked on, and walked into it, knowing. Could I or will I be able to summon that kind of courage? I will have courage knowing that God will never leave my side.

Holy Lord, you are with me always, and I know you hear my prayers. I am truly thankful. Amen

Matthew 20:18-19

This makes me think of military men and women who go into harms way, they go willingly but not knowing what their fate may be, many likely pray for protection. They go courageously. Jesus marched into harms way, fully knowing his fate and did so out of love, this is unimaginable love. He went for all – the faithful and loyal, the sinners , and even the unlovable.

Dear Lord, help me to look to you in my times of trouble to always be fully aware of your Grace. Amen.

Matthew 20:18-19

“See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”

Jesus's prediction of his death was to prepare his disciples for what was to come. However, the disciples did not understand what was about to take place. This is the third time that Jesus tells his disciples that he was heading to the cross. And this time it wasn’t something off in the future. Instead, the cross was awaiting…

Matthew 20:18-19

I can just picture the scene. Jesus and his disciples are getting reading walk to Jerusalem. Jesus takes them aside and says the words of Matthew 20:18-19. Now we need to remember that he has told them this before--two other times to be exact. I wonder how they felt as they began the 14 mile journey to Jerusalem. Did some of them finally understand and begin to worry about what was going to happen. Were some of them in denial trying to figure what this was all about. Were they as worried about themselves as they were about Jesus, after all, he told them he was going to die! Did they realize that everything was about to change?

Matthew 20:18-19

Fully divine, Jesus carried out His mission without hesitation. Fully human, He dreaded the suffering that lay ahead, even suggesting that perhaps this cup could be lifted from Him. Sacrifice of this magnitude can only emanate from God. As horribly cruel and humiliating as Jesus’ death was, the love He showed and expressed, even as He was dying, to His mother, the thief beside Him and even those mocking Him was a love that changed the course of human history. I wonder sometimes how He can possibly still love us given the state of the world today, but then remember He told us in this world we will face trouble. With His resolute walk from Jericho to Jerusalem…
