Matthew 2:13

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

It is hard to imagine a more important message for an angel to deliver. Likewise, it was important for Joseph to understand and accept the message, and then to act on it. The dream was vital to our collective history because Jesus’ very life depended on this message being delivered. But God could have delivered Jesus safely without the dream. So that makes me wonder, is the dream for us? Are we to see that God really will and really does communicate with us when he needs to? He is certainly able to do so.

Holy Lord, please let me know when I am missing something important. Speak to me, God, in some way, when you wish for me to hear. I pray that you do not let me miss what I am meant to hear and know. Amen

Matthew 2:13

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

The lesson we all need to remember from Mary and Joseph is, God used ordinary people to accomplish His purposes: People who went through the same kind of changes we go through in life, people who made the same kind of mistakes we make, and people who were sinners just like us. Joseph was a man of godly wisdom.  Joseph had a dream in…

Matthew 2:13

This verse speaks about the second of three dreams God sent to Joseph. I have never had a dream that caused me to act upon something. Joseph had three. A very important three as God had chosen Joseph to protect this child, the Messiah. It seems obvious that Joseph was a man of God and receptive to these dreams. I read this morning that this kind of dream and the guidance it gives comes only to prepared hearts. It is also interesting that after a week of learning about Angels, all three of Joseph’s dreams had the message delivered by an Angel. To me these dreams are small but vital miracles God put into place to prot…

Matthew 2:13

Joseph seemed to have a special relationship with God. A dream led him to accept Mary’s pregnancy and serve as earthly father to Jesus and in this verse a dream warns him of danger to Jesus. Even today there seem to be people to whom God communicates via dreams. I think of the number of stories I have read and heard about Muslims seeing Jesus in a dream and converting to Christianity despite great risks in countries where this could lead to severe persecution, imprisonment or even execution. Since returning from our week away in Randolph, I have had vivid dreams nightly. Thay have not been especially unpleasant, but I cannot remember them and ths kind of stretch…
