A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, October 2

1 Corinthians 15: 3-5

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.

The importance of Jesus Christ and the surety of his divinity is not something that the disciples and other early believers just thought up. They saw, even in the immediate years after Christ was crucified, that His life and death was foretold in scripture. This early theology was based on what was already written, and what the Jewish people had studied and believed. If they had not known the scriptures so well, or listened to and remembered all of Jesus’ words, the full importance of Jesus life and death may have been missed! That is impossible to imagine…

Holy Lord, thank you for setting things out for us so that we can get to know you and a little of your plan. Sometimes we get ahead of ourselves and believe that we know more than we really know. Help us to see the truth. Amen

1 Corinthians 15:3-5

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter , then to the twelve.

It does us no good if we don’t believe in the resurrection. It does us no good if we go to church or study and feel good when we…

1 Corinthians 15:3-5

Even today we need reminders about the words of the prophets. Every Christmas Cantata I have sung has a scripture reference and a song about preparing for a coming Messiah. Songs that speak of waiting and longing and songs about preparing the way. We need to remember that all that happened to Jesus had been foretold—just as the scriptures said.

Prayer: Gracious God, we need to remember your grand plan and the words of the prophets. Amen

1 Corinthians 15: 3-5

Those who reject the great creeds of the church because they were composed centuries after Jesus was crucified and “were the product of myth makers,” must willfully ignore Scripture to draw this conclusion. Paul’s letters make it plain that what we recite in the creeds reflect events he and many others experienced at the time. If Christ was not raised from the dead, our faith is in vain. It is inconceivable that the death of a good man, even an extraordinarily good man could so alter the course of history that our calendar is based on His birth. It is faulty postmodern, progressive theology and not Scripture that deserves rejection as it does not grasp the…
