A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, October 16

Matthew 18:10

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

This passage is not at all clear to me. Because I was not clear, I read some interpretations of the verse, and they differed quite substantially, and all admitted Jesus’ true message here is not certain. Was he talking literally about children, who each had a guardian angel? His disciples, who were special and each had an angel? All believers, especially the lowly and marginalized? Was there one angel for each or are there lots and lots of them, tending to whatever needs to be done? So, today, I am not (yet) much clearer about angels, but much more curious! And Jesus does let us know here that there is a direct connection between those of us believers here in this life, and our Father, in heaven.

Holy Father, help me to understand. I want to feel close to you and to be reassured that you are watching out for me. I am thankful for your love and for your promise. Amen

Matthew  18:10

My study Bible saids that in this passage Jesus warns against looking down on others. When  Jesus refers to “these little ones” whose angels see the face of God, is he talking to his disciples is he saying those little ones who will enter the kingdom of heaven, mean all children and maybe all believers, whatever their age.  If the angel is always before the face of the Father, how can it be following the child around making sure that it doesn’t…

Matthew 18:10

This week’s journey into the spiritual realm will be challenging, proven by this very first verse. I took Bev’s “before and after” approach and context helped me understand verse 10 better - not perfectly, but better. Matthew 18 is a series of lessons taught by Jesus. He starts the teaching by calling a child to stand among them (18:2), then frames His teaching round having the unfettered faith of a child. As for our verse 10, it precedes the parable of the lost sheep. I see the 100 sheep as “these little ones” and the shepherd as God who leaves the 99 to rescue the one who went astray. Here is where my analogy is strained. Does God…
