Philippians 3:13-14
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Paul's goal was one which was set by God. Although the goal itself was huge, extremely difficult and dangerous, Paul seemingly had few doubts as to whether to continue toward it. I can't help but feel as if a goal set by God and delivered personally to me would leave no doubt in my mind. But the goals I end up setting for myself don't come to me like this. Perhaps if I prayed about my plans, and asked for direction from God more often, I would have a better sense of His will for me.
Holy Lord, help me to slow down and ask, help me to slow down and listen. Thy will be done. Amen

Philippians 3:13-14
It’s good to have goals. My parents set a wonderful example for me. They moved to the country from the city when I was 3. I think when they found me sitting on the railroad tracks close to our back yard, that decision was made. My dad worked very low paying jobs always looking for the next employment improvement. He finally qualified as a firefighter and felt he had made it! My mom worked in school kitchens and eventually was the lead cafeteria lady. They were always looking to do their best. Their goal was for me to go to college (the first in our families) and they succeeded. My Dad died at only 59 an…

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
(Paul is called Saul here) and one important lesson he has learned was to let go of his sins of the past and process forward. As we continue on our Christian journey, we’re letting go of the causes of the disappointments of our sins of the past and move forward learning what God has for us. We are changing with a new vision , plan…
Philippians 3:13-14
The phrase from this passage that grabs my attention this morning is, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” Ths is an encouraging message anytime, but especially so at the start of a new year. I cannot change what has happened in the past, and focusing on that only leads to disappointment or mawkish nostalgia. The very act of setting or establishing goals implies looking ahead and not backwards. Sanctification, the pursuit of holiness, may take place in fits and starts, but my setbacks should never distract me from the ultimate goal.
Prayer - Lord, my sin is ever before me, yet the goal You have established for me overcomes the temporary setbacks I bring…
