A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, Feb. 3

Updated: Feb 10, 2021

Matthew 8:14-17

Mark 1:29-31

Luke 4:38-39

The passages today report Jesus’ visit to Simon and Andrew’s home. Simon’s mother-in-law has a fever and Jesus heals her. Others come by and are brought to him, and Jesus heals others and drives out demons.

In each of the three passages Simon’s mo-in-law immediately gets up “and begins to wait on them.” This makes me smile because I can see this woman accepting and believing Jesus’ divinity very readily. She is immediately ready to serve him, as is her role. Some in our modern culture would put her down for this, but I see her behavior as immediate faith and gratitude.

Holy Lord, May I see your blessings and your power all around me. Nothing happens without your will. The “everyday” is divine. Amen

Matthew 8:14-17...Mark 1:29-31...Luke 4:38-39

Time after time Jesus showed the authority of his words and power over any and all illness. Here, Jesus rebuked the fever, he simply told the fever to depart, and it did. His words were powerful and healing. This lady was not only instantly made well, but she was also restored to health, vitality, and usefulness. So much so she immediately arose and served them. She was blessed and thus blesses others. Jesus still have the power to heal and restore us today if we obey him. When we believe and obey his message, Jesus' words restore our spiritual health, vitality, and usefulness. God's healing power restores us not only to health but to active se…

2021-0203 Wednesday, Daily Devotion - Luke 4:38-41 (NIV)

41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.

A fact that is still challenging me is that “Demons knew He was the Messiah.” Although even demons know who Jesus is, there are so many people who Jesus is. How can I help them to know who Jesus is?

Lord, whenever I remember the fact that Demons knew He was the Messiah, I wonder how I can serve/help people who do not know who Jesus is, how important to know and believe in Jesus. Pour out more Your…

Matthew 8: 5-13, Mark 1: 29-31, Luke 4: 38-39

These verses all tell the same story. It showed the authority and power Jesus had over illness. His words were powerful. Jesus words still have the power to heal us today, if we obey them. Having the faith in His messages and obeying them restores our spiritual health. It is through these words that we become whole.

Dearest Father God I have spent these past years learning and listening to the words of Jesus and learning about his life. Continue to restore and remake me into the person you want me to become. Amen.

I know our focus is on healing, but three readings of the story highlight this was Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. Nowhere in Scripture do we learn about his wife or any children. Was she a believer? If not, did this change anything? How did she deal with her husband quitting his day job to be a traveling evangelist? My sister spent a lot of time managing her life, career and two children alone while my brother-in-law was at sea months at a time for the United States Navy. Yet their kids grew up to be well-adjusted, successful and married themselves. As for Lee and Katie, their marriage remains strong and loving after over forty years. The only answer it would seem…
