See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
I sometimes hear the terms “good theology” and “bad theology” and this verse speaks to both. It is not up to us as human beings to determine good or bad theology. It is up to God to let us know which is which. Understanding scripture with the guidance of the Holy Spirit leads us in the right direction. Do all those who claim to know the Truth, receive this knowledge from the Holy Spirit? We must be careful, and always choose to follow what we know Jesus taught us.
Holy God, there are some things which we could use a bit more guidance to fully understand. Help me to hear the Truth from you. Teach me, Lord. Amen

At the risk of over-simplifying, I like the concept of the authority of Scripture. If a teaching or philosophy is contrary to a plain reading of the Word of God, then I am more likely to consider it hollow and deceptive. Complete revisionist interpretation of Scriptue always raise my theological antennae. We are living in contentious and difficult times. We must stay alert and diligent to use
Scripture as the final arbiter of what Scripture teaches.
Prayer - God of Spirit and Truth, help me daily to wade through hollow and deceptive words masquerading as Your word. We trust in and are sanctified by Your truth. Amen

I love when scripture gets right to the point. This one certainly does.
