A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, Oct. 1

1Timothy 4:4-5

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

God gave us literally everything in the world to work with. He gave us all the growing plants and all the animals who move on the earth. Now, there are some things we do not eat, from culture to culture. But scripture tells us that we no longer must avoid any particular food to avoid sinning. Maybe today’s reading is simply to remind me to be thankful for all of the choices I do have. (Imagine a shopper in a market in Jesus’ time suddenly being plopped down in a Market Basket.) I have so much more than I deserve, and I am truly thankful.

Holy Lord, as Thanksgiving approaches, may I be fully aware of the many blessings you have showered over your creation. I am thankful, and am ready to share and to bless others with the guidance of your Holy Spirit. Amen

1 Timothy 4:4

I’m not sure I say Thank You enough during my day. Sure, we do much .thanking on Thanksgiving, but surely we should be doing much more. I know most evenings before I close my eyes, I Thank God for the day behind me and then for the day ahead. I also know that often sleep comes too soon and the Thanks are lost. How busy I often make my days that there is no time for some quiet and

Thankfulness. Shame on me.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me make thanking you a priority each day. Amen

1 Timothy 4:4

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.

Paul reminds Timothy not to be swayed by the false teachings of others. We have all been  given certain gifts from God to be used for service in any way we can. . Every one of us should be prepared to face that calling. Sometimes our gifts go unused because we are busy or distracted. Timothy was very busy establishing his congregation, so Paul reminded Timothy that the gift God had given him was not to be neglected. Why do some people blame God when bad things happen to good people and accuse Him…

1Timothy 4:4-5

“Nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving . . .” As our kitchen renovation slowly proceeds, I have developed a renewed sense of thanksgiving for a well-made home-cooked meal. On the other hand, this verse tells me that meals from a microwave, toaster oven, crockpot or take-out, should be received with the same sense thanksgiving. After all, as I eat these meals there are those, even in our community, who may not have a meal at all today.

Prayer - Thank You, Lord for Your generous blessing of nourishing food. I pray for those who are food insecure to find a pathway to getting food for themselves and their families. I give thanks for…
