A Daily Devotion for Thursday, November 21

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Why is it so difficult to eliminate anxiety? Even this morning, when I am supposed to be practicing being thankful, reading God’s Word and learning from Jesus, I spend 30 minutes or so fretting about our newly arrived tax bill first. There is so very much to be thankful for. We have a warm and comfortable home, more than we need to eat, more “stuff” than we have room for. It was our choice to live this way. I just finished reading a book about a missionary family in the Congo in the 60s through the 80s and 90s. What the African people lived through- their entire system and way of life was destroyed. We have never experienced anything close to that. In some ways, I think my useless anxieties must be irritating to God. Just what exactly am I worried about? I have all that I need- God has provided more than enough.

Holy Lord, help me to be more giving, less full of useless anxieties and worries. The more I give, the better I will feel-I know this is true. Time and talents and small comforts are easy to share every day. Help me move forward, I pray. Amen

Philippians 4:6-7

I am now and have always been someone who worries about lots of things. I always think, well someone has to care. But now I add prayer to my worry because i know God is good. I know he listens. Most of the time my worry has evolved into prayer.

Prayer: Gracious God, Thank you for this lesson. A great reminder for me. Amen

Philippians 4:6-7

Like yesterday’s passage, the call is to be thankful in all circumstances. It is very important to note that this call is also one to pray thanksgiving forward. We present our petition with thanksgiving for what God will do. This does not guarantee any specific outcome, but, if we let it, gives us peace. This kind of peace can be elusive, but is definitely worth the pursuit.

Prayer - Gracious God, You know my needs. I come to Your throne of grace in thanksgiving, confident that You will provide what I truly need. Let this confidence result in an inexpressibly peaceful heart. Amen

Philippians 4: 6-7

It is very difficult to not be anxious about anything (impossible for me). Especially with this crazy world we live in, there is so much that can cause anxiety, not to mention, the day-to-day concerns we have for our family and our friends. The good news is that when I’m overly concerned or anxious about a situation I do turn to prayer. There is always comfort knowing I can hand over my anxieties to God. I try not to complain, but sometimes my attitude is not that great. It is so important for me to try hard to keep an eye on all the blessings in my life and there are many! At the end of t…

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We can always thank Him for hearing us and that He loves us. We can thank Him for always being there and for his  many  excellent qualities (creator, provider, righteousness, wisdom, and the knowledge  of all things, etc.) I Think of all the ways I can glorify his name and again thank Him for his sovereignty. When I pray with thanksgiving, it changes my perspective and attitude. When I pray with thanksgiving,…
