A Daily Devotion for Thursday, January 2

2Corinthians 2:17

Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.

When thinking of the word ‘sincerity’ in this text, it is as though God is reminding me- He already knows my heart. Transparency is a given where God is concerned. We may be able to get away with small insincerities among our earthly companions, but this does not get past God. Sincerity needs to be my way of life, in all circumstances and situations.

Holy Lord, May your Holy Spirit remind me daily if I stray into insincerity. This is not the way you want me to live. Help me to be loving, honest and sincere in all my dealings. Amen

2 Corinthians 2:17

You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ's authority, knowing God is watching us.

Hucksters is such a good word to describe some of the televangelists we have in our world today. Despite using God's words, they are lining their pockets and living in luxury. They preach about prosperity not about sacrifice and love as Jesus did. They don't seem to be worried that God is watching them. (I sure was when my Mom would remind me that God was watching me so.....)

Prayer: Gracious God, Help people see the truth about you that the hucksters don't preach. AMEN

2 Corinthians 2:17

Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word  of God for profit.,but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Would I know if someone’s a peddler of God’s Word. Anyone who uses their ministry as a

different way to communicate an idea by changing and altering God message, pointing  to themselves in order to build confidence with an audience, would be a peddler of God’s Word. People who promote themselves in their ministry and get rich off it probably would be recognized as a peddler because others would recognize them as the source to trust and support. True ministers, on the other…

2Corinthians 2:17

People so desperate for the hope that the Word brings sometimes fail to discern when there is a lack of sincerity in their teachers and guides. The history of the church is littered with those who peddle the word of God for profit. God has given us the means to sort these issues out and the renewal and future of the Church will depend on the sincerity of her leaders. The measuring stick for all who would preach the Word is the Word itself. We each must remain in the Scriptures regularly enough to recognize when the individual before us is a person of God or a mere peddler.

Prayer - Lord, please sharpen our ability of discernment…
