A Daily Devotion for Thursday, August 15

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Paul is stating an argument that goes through my mind very often: How can anyone deny the existence of God with this beautiful and impossibly complex creation right in front of them? The beauty of the earth draws us to God and is irrefutable evidence of His supreme love and power. I need to remember to be thankful each and every day for all of the beauty around us. I no longer need to be convinced that this is God’s handiwork, I can simply enjoy and be a good steward.

Holy Lord, I am thankful for the beauty all around me. I will do my best to care for your creation. Forgive me for the times that I may be (or have been) careless. Amen

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature —have been clearly seen , being understood from what has been made so that men are without excuse.

Ever since the world was created, we the people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, we  can clearly see his invisible qualities—God is: All-powerful, sovereign, holy, merciful and good. Some of us may not see God this way, either because of our life experience or because of what we’ve been taught. But God does want us to know who He is, so the Bible is full of details highlighting His character. So we have no excuse for…

Romans 1:20

When I observe the intricacies of the natural world and those of the human body, I really don’t understand how people cannot see God at work. A child forming in the womb or a small seed becoming a tree are simply amazing. I saw an article that compared the root system of a tree to the network of veins in our bodies. Both provide life—one in nature and one in humans. To me none of this is just science or evolution. It is the work of our God.

Prayer: Gracious God, you are amazing. Thank you for this beautiful and complex world around me. Amen

Romans 1:20

The existence of God is hidden in plain sight from the skeptic. The belief that everything in the natural world is the result of random chemical and structural reactions is simply absurd. I write my reflection from the same place every morning and a single look out my window can be as powerful as Scripture in focusing my thoughts on God. Paul is right, there is no excuse. I have quoted this aphorism before, but it is apt for today’s verse. I do not see because I believe. I believe because I see.

Prayer - God of all that surrounds us, thank You for the incredible gifts we see daily in nature and too often take for granted.…
