A Daily Devotion for Monday, September 16

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Joy comes with the Holy Spirit. When I am suddenly filled with joy, (sometimes for no apparent reason), I know the Holy Spirit is awake and alive in me. I believe this joy is a gift from God, freely given by His grace. I can’t produce joy on my own, but the closer I grow to God, the more in communion with his Holy Spirit, the more joy I will experience.

Holy Lord, may I feel your presence today through this Monday, and recognize your Spirit at work in me. May I be satisfied always, knowing you are with me, and may I not miss those special moments of joy you send my way. Amen

These fruits consist of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control...(we could also add generosity, humility, thankfulness, holiness, compassion, mercy, justice and  truthfulness.) Would’t it be nice if we were able to show these actions in our every day life, showing love while exercising…

Galatians 5:22-23

Paul does not explicitly write the fruit of the Spirit is listed in order of importance. On the other hand, I don’t think it accidental that love, joy and peace head the list. This trio is the three-legged stool upon which all the others rest. Having an undercurrent of joy as one’s “default position” makes life a little less challenging to navigate. The focus is less on the negative, which I have the annoying tendency to do. Joy, not unlike it’s namesake detergent, scrapes layers of crud off the surface of life to bring out its shine.

Prayer - Come Holy Spirit and fill me with Your fruit. Grace me with the measure of joy I need to…
