A Daily Devotion for Monday, Nov. 16

Deuteronomy 8:1-6

verse 3: He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

God is in control. This verse in particular feels very important to me today. We go through times and experiences which are painful, uncomfortable, and sometimes nearly unbearable. What is the point? God is still there for us. He is there through all of it, and has nurturing love and wisdom to fill us, if we seek it. I don’t believe God intends for me to suffer, but when I do, he intends for me to seek him out. If I do seek Him out, I believe He answers me. And the answer may be something I have never seen or heard of before, like manna from Heaven!

Father God, May I always look to you first for comfort and direction. May I recognize the manna you send. Amen

Deuteronomy 8:1-6 Reading this reminded me that we do not give thanks and praise to God enough daily. I know I talk with God often, but it is mostly asking for help for the people I love, myself, and the world. Yes, we give thanks at our meals and prayers at other times, but we seldom just thank God for the great everyday things he gives us. A sunrise, a hot cup of tea, a home in which to enjoy it, our loved ones, our jobs, and our church. A former Pastor reminded us that stopping every once in a while just to praise God for all we have is equally important to our well-being as seeking him when things…

Deuteronomy 8: 1-6

If we can earn enough money to dress, eat and play in high style we think we are living the good life. Even with all of this It does not satisfy our deepest longings. We are left empty and dissatisfied and do not know why. When we commit our lives to God, the one who created life itself we will learn discipline, sacrifice and hard work. If we do not commit to these practices, perhaps we will never find it. It is real easy to take God’s protection for granted. We seldom take notice or thank God for all we have, when every thing is going as planned. Your car does not break down, your f…

Deuteronomy 8: 1-6

5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

I sometimes ask why God allows us pain and sorrow in our lives. I feel that as I study the Bible and learn more about all God did for us from creation to the present time, was to teach me. All the trials I have experienced in my life, whether self-inflected or not, was for me to learn from them. I had to learn how to deal with grief, pain, heartbreak and loss before I could understand that life is not a party. I need to remember that God loves me even when bad things happen. I…

Deuteronomy 8:2 - “Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments.”

My wilderness journey was not forty years, but closer to ten. Like the wandering Israelites, I did not lose sight of God, but neither was I trusting or obeying. My manna came in the form of an angel from Michigan named Rebecca. Even together there were humbling trials we faced in starting our family but God provided and our journey together over the last three decades has been blessing upon blessing. God knows what is in our…
