A Daily Devotion for Monday, May 29

Luke 21:34

"Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap."

This verse reminds me of the saying, "Don't put off until tomorrow what can be done today." My faith in God, and the direction He gives me, should never take second place to worldly concerns. But I know this happens to me all too often. Today I give thanks to my parents for introducing me to Jesus very early in my worldly life. Without this start, it is hard to know where I would be today.

Holy Lord, I am sure I have disappointed you many times. But I am so thankful you know my heart. You know how I long to be closer to you. Guide me please. Amen

I might continue sinning and then turn to God at the very last minute. We are promised eternal life with Jesus, but it is important to remember that we have much work to do here and now. Christ’s second coming will be a swift and sudden surprise to all of us. There will…

Luke 21:34

”That day” - Jesus is teaching about the last days and brings a sober warning. We are so easily distracted by our own selfish pleasures and petty worries that even if we encounter the Lord face to face we will fail to cling to that grace and fall into the trap of the enemy of our soul. So much of the work of being a Christian is in paying attention and staying focused.

Prayer - Gracious God, help me to fully understand that the concerns and selfish pleasures of the day are distractions, Satan’s trap. Keep me focused on the purpose You have established for me. Silence the background noise and let me rest in You. Amen
