A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 4

Deuteronomy 29:29

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

These words were spoken by Moses to the Israelites. To me they are a reminder that no amount of study or specifically theological study will reveal secrets which God intends to remain secret. In other words, we know what God wants us to know. But with this amount of knowledge, we are a mess in this world: divided, set in our ways, rigid and judgmental. And I think much of the conflict comes from our believing we know things that we just do not know. God has given us so many gifts, gifts we can recognize and be thankful for. Help me, Lord, to stay in my own lane and not allow myself to judge. I am only asked to love; to love You and to love my neighbor. That I can do, and that I understand. Amen

Deuteronomy 29:29

There is so much I don’t understand about God’s words. What he hasn’t said, the secrets, might help us but maybe he wants us to use what we do know to work out our difficulties. Those words have taught us to just love and understand each other. Why can’t we all do that? Maybe everyone can’t or won’t but some of us can. Our actions should be what God wants.

Prayer: Gracious God, I hope you understand I am doing my best to be the person you want me to be. Amen

DEUTERONOMY 29:29

The secret things belong to the lord our God but  the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

There are many scripture lessons in both the Old and New Testament regarding our scripture for today. I chose Roman’s 11:33 (O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out) is similar to Deuteronomy 29:29 in that they both mention the secret things belonging only to the Lord.

How many times have I realized that God’s  time is not mine, nor are his plans anywhere near  mine.…

Deuteronomy 29:29

There is a poignancy to Moses’ word to the Israelites. He would only see the Promised Land from a distance but would never enter it himself. I wonder if the episode that caused this was in the back of his mind when addressing the people about God’s secrets versus the things God reveals to us. I agree with Becky that when we “get ahead of God,” thinking we know more than we do, our witness to the world becomes tarnished and we bring ridicule down on ourselves. I am reminded of Donald Rumfeld’s famous press conference that has become a meme. It went something like, “We know what we know, and we know what we don’t know, but…
