A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 13

Genesis 1:1-4

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Light is goodness, and helps us to see. God gave us this gift, gave light this kind of value. It makes things grow, it allows us to see, (What could eyes do without any light?) It is a central need, a main ingredient, for our lives. And light is an enduring symbol for God. This is where it all begins for us, in our walk with God, towards God. We need light, both literally and figuratively,

Holy Lord, help me to value light for all it means for us. Help me to seek you out wherever I am. Amen

And God separated the light from the darkness.

When it’s dark by 5:30 P.M.…ugh. This is my least favorite time of year. I love living in a part of the world that has all four seasons, but I must admit: once Daylight Savings Time hits late fall, I dread the early darkness. There is something about…

Genesis 1:1-4 Just four verses into the Bible we gain incredible imagery into the nature of God and the natural law of good and evil. God is established as the Creator and God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit works in tandem with God. The elegant symbolism of illuminating God’s creation and characterizing the light as good takes on even more significance when we are told God separated the light from darkness. Just as we can easily discern the separateness of darkness and light, so too was the human heart given the innate sense of what is good and what is evil. They are always separate. What is evil for one can never be good for another. This is the lie that haunts…
