A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 11

Acts 5:29-32

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead —whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

The commandment to have no other Gods but the one true God stands over all man-made laws. I think of the courage of the early disciples, to continue to teach about Jesus and to spread the Good News despite the risk to their earthly freedom and lives. If I could have a fraction of that courage, I would be forever thankful. I imagine we all wonder from time to time how we would react in a similar situation- would we declare our faith?

Holy God, I ask today for courage to stand up and declare my faith, and to never be afraid or even worse, ashamed. May your Holy Spirit fill me each and every day. I am thankful, God. Amen

And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

I have  to trust my heart and intuition and say with all certainty , the first commandment

That I shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Just as the apostles…

Acts 5:29-32

I just read an article yesterday about a covert Christian student organization in Nazi Germany called the White Rose. Their strong faith and beliefs led them to clandestinely print and distribute pamphlets denouncing the murderous regime of Hitler in the name of Jesus. One night, a janitor at a university spotted two of them, a brother and sister, 20 and 17 years old, respectively, distributing pamphlets. He locked them in the building and called the Gestapo. The name of a third member was on a paper in the pocket of the boy and he too was arrested. They were found guilty of treason in a 90-minute trial and sentenced to hang. Each went to their deaths stoically and…
