A Daily Devotion for Friday, November 1

1John 4:1

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

It is certainly worth reading the next two verses to add meaning here. They remind me of what we have recently talked about concerning God’s will. Are we living our lives according to God’s will? Just as we can evaluate the choices we make in our lives, we can evaluate spirits, dreams, messages we receive. Do communications we receive (feel, dream, hear) come from God or somewhere else? I believe that a way to look closer is to put the messages to the test: do they further God’s Kingdom? Are they loving? Are they kind? Would God send this message, or is it likely from somewhere else?

Holy Lord, I am afraid that I am more likely to miss messages completely than to interpret them incorrectly. Speak to me in any way you choose, I pray, and I will listen for you. I will choose to do your will whenever I see a choice, to the best of my ability. Amen

1 John 4:1

It seems like, more than ever before, we must be very careful with the messages that come our way in this complex world we live in. These messages can come to us in many forms. I believe there are false prophets everywhere testing us every day. We need to challenge and carefully examine these messages.

Dear Lord, help me to be discerning with the messages that come to me, from wherever they may come from and I pray any action I take as a result of any message is for good. Amen

1 John 4:1. From the Message

My dear friends, don’t believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.

Now, more than ever. We need to heed this warning. There is so much misinformation out there that is so easily accessible. As I always taught my students when they were doing research, “check your sources.” That used to be relatively easy. It is not easy today. Especially when reading on line. People have the ability to steal people’s identity, therefore you might believe their lies. Today, I feel we should rely less on online services a…

1 John 4:1

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

A  true prophet’s teachings are consistent with Scripture. • A true prophet will acknowledge Jesus Christ as divine.  As we continue  to grow in our spiritual maturity, we will recognize  they do not speak from scripture. Most of the time if  we compare their words with the Bible we see the two messages do not agree. The most effective way to guard ourselves against deceptive teachers and false doctrine is to know the truth. Any believer who studies the Bible carefully will spot a definite difference…

1John 4:1

John gives a straightforward interpretive formula for dreams, one that really applies to all of life. If following Christ is the highest priority, then all we do, say and even dream should be measured against what Jesus taught and did as revealed to us in Scripture. John makes clear that anything that does not reflect Christ is “the voice of the anti-Christ.” This is not to be trivialized as it is so often in today’s confused spiritual environment. Now is the time we should be listening for God’s voice more closely and carefully than ever.

Prayer - Lord, protect me from the voice of the anti-Christ. Grant me the discernment while awake and asleep to hear and heed…
