A Daily Devotion for Friday, Dec. 20

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus is our destination if we need rest. He invites us to hand over our problems and yoke ourselves to Him. Our burdens become lighter when we share them with God. This is a beautiful passage to have tucked in my heart, because it has “peace” attached.

Holy Lord, May the gift of your Son be in the hearts and souls of all of mankind as we approach Christmas. I am eternally grateful and hope that I live out my thankfulness by serving and loving your creation, all of my neighbors, and those who are more difficult for me to love, as well. Amen

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

This scripture is so full of promise and peace. It’s nice to know I don’t have to worry about things. Figure out everything or carry the burdens and stress in my life. I have always known that I will never know everything about everything . I need to become comfortable with saying I don’t know the answer  to my many dilemmas  and …

Matthew 11:28-30

My choir sings an anthem based on the words of Matthew 11:28-30. The title says it all, "Come Learn from Me." This is Jesus telling us to always give him your worries so you can rest. The melody is lovely and repeats the theme: give me your every burden, from your burdens you will be free. Take my yoke, my yoke is easy, come and I will give you rest. Why, then, do we always first try to solve things on our own, causing anxiety and lack of sleep. When he says Come Learn from Me, we need to remember Jesus knew there were times he needed to leave the crowds and find peace in prayer wi…

Matthew 11:28–30

The Lord provides for us, lightens our load. I wish I would more readily allowed Christ to lighten my load. Many times I try to figure out how to “fix things” on my own that may be way beyond what I can change instead of turning to the solace of prayer. Why is that so difficult? It is low hanging fruit for the taking.

Dear Lord, help me to rely more on you to lighten my load, as I am so grateful for what you provide for me. Thank you for allowing me to let you take my burdens. Amen.

Matthew 11:28-30

The Advent study we are doing, called Faithful: Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph makes special note of this verse from Matthew’s gospel. Adam Hamilton, the author, reminds us Jesus likely worked side by side with Joseph for years and had crafted countless yokes for oxen. This was an illustration that reflected His lived experience as a human being even as He offered His divine nature as a source of rest and peace. Instead of a time for carrying heavy burdens, I relish Advent and Christmas as a time to unburden and find rest for my soul. My spiritual goal is to be as relaxed as our precious hound in the post picture. That’s what I imagine to…
