A Daily Devotion for Friday, April 16

1John: 5: 18-21

verse 20a: We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true.

Sometimes I lose track of the gift of the Holy Spirit. I don’t mean losing the Holy Spirit itself, I mean forgetting I have that power. And so there are times I forget to call on that power. I need the Holy Spirit to show the way, to give me understanding. No amount of study on my part will bear fruit unless God grants me the understanding and opens my eyes.

Holy One, your gifts are priceless. I cannot do this life on my own. Thank you for sending Jesus, so that I could have forgiveness and know God in man, and thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to live in me and guide me and bring me closer to you. Amen

1 John 5: 18-21 John tells us that God has given us the understandings we need, so we may know him better, because he is the truth. John looks at us like a loving parent looks at his child. He has taken the time to instruct us in all sorts of things. When we send our child out, we give them instructable words because we know they are true and we know they’re important. We hope our child remembers our advice. John does the same thing, and he hopes we will remember his advice. John’s advice is important, and putting these words into action will save us from pain, but more importantly, they will bring glory to God. John first rem…

1 John 5:20-21

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

It was a great help for my understanding to know and realized that Jesus is the true God, eternal life, and the Word of God that is with us now. From that point, my Christian life is getting more intimate with God through the Word of God, which is Jesus Christ and God. I found that understanding the Word of…

1 John 5: 18-21

18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe and the evil one cannot harm them.

What I have come to understand, and this is my understanding, is that by being born of God and redeemed by Jesus, I need to profess a change of attitude. I need to change my life and attempt to follow the commands of God. If I do not change my thought process, I am only deceiving myself. And when I do sin, and I will, I need to profess a profound regret and ask for forgiveness. This gift was given to me so that I can…

1 John 5:21 - “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

There may be some resemblance to the idols John writes about and those of today, but the guidance is still valid. I describes today’s idols as the “DAMPS”: Drugs, Alcohol, Materialism, Power/Prestige and Sexual immorality. As long as we are dedicated to any of these idol, our pathway to God is blocked. We are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. This leaves no room for these modern-day idols to control our lives.

Prayer - Gracious God, You have provided all we need spiritually and we must trust You to provide all else that we need to avoid the snares of the modern world’s idols. As…
