Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
How beautiful! We really do lack nothing. And at the top of the list of provisions: green pastures and quiet waters. God’s creation provides all that we need, as long as we remain in relationship with him. My mind is spinning with an idea this morning. This psalm is so dense and packed with meaning, and at the same time so accessible. I love it. Thank you, God for your Word. Amen

The Lord’s prayer and Psalm 23 are probably the most widely known Bible passages, providing comfort strength & encouragement as we grow in spiritual maturity learning to understand God (the good Shepard) Both passages are clear, personal and reassuring, addressing our every concern and vividly portraying God’s faithful friendship with us, & His unseen, caring love in our daily lives.

6 Surly your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
This Psalm tells me how Creation Care works. God leads me on this journey hoping I will learn how to walk closely with him. The words speak of peace, comfort, guidance and love. As the Good Shepherd, God watches over his creations and through the Holy Spirit guides on this journey. At the end of this journey of life we are promised a place with God forever.

Psalm 23 The beautiful 23rd Psalm offers us a reminder that our belief in God and his son Jesus, is all we really need. It offers us rest and peace, strength and direction. He is with us in our darkest times and loves us all the days of our lives. Perhaps we should read or recite it every day. Prayer: gracious God, thank you for all you have given us, and especially these words from David. Amen And thank you for the spectacular sunset last evening.

This was likely among the first few scripture passages committed to memory by children when Sunday school did that type of thing. I recall that we did this in our church when I was growing up. Psalm 23 has layers of meaning that one can take comfort in at nearly every stage of life and all its circumstances. The image of green pastures and still waters evoke peace and tranquility, as does just about any reference to the great outdoors for me. This is where I must turn my mind when the cares of the world try to intrude and disrupt God’s peace.
