A Daily Devotion for Friday, July 16

Acts 14: 14-18

Verse 15: “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.”

Paul and Barnabas resisted any temptation to take credit for God’s power. Yesterday I heard part of an interview of a baseball player who had just won an award. It seemed to be a pretty big deal to the person interviewing him. The baseball player had a huge smile on his face. The first words out of his mouth were to give thanks to God, who was with him, helping him, and made this possible. He was so humble! Everything we are able to do or to achieve, every kindness, good deed, act of friendship or show of support, we are able to do because of God, and to His glory. If I am able to achieve good or even great things, the glory belongs to God. I should be less timid about saying so.

Holy One, you are in control, giving us the power to do great things. Amen

One of the easiest ways to show kindness is by being present, physically and mentally. Put your phone away, and give people your full attention when you're with them. Be intentional about eye contact, and share the gift of a smile.

Acts 14:14-18Acts.14:17 Yet he did not leave himself without witness he has shown you kindness by giving you rains from heaven and crops in their seasons, he provided you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy. I love to show kindness and do good things for people, and to always remember when people show and do the same for me. God wants us to always seek these actions for one another and for all people. Doing g…

ACTS 14:14-18

Paul and Barnabas could not speak or understand the Lycaonian language very well, but they were trying to teach the word of God to the people. In hindsight it probably was a mistake to heal the lame without first getting the message across to them that their power came from God. The people believed in different gods and so concluded that Paul and Barnabas were their gods in human form. Their troubles stemmed from not having a very good plan. Maybe they should have used Roz’s method of explaining God’s power through pictures.

Dear Lord, these verses show us that getting your message across to people requires an understanding of where they are in their beliefs. It teaches…

Acts 14: 14-18

15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

Trouble can come in many ways. It came to Paul in Barnabas due to an act of kindness when they healed the lame man. Trouble can come in many shapes and sizes, but no matter how big or small the trouble may be, it is still difficult to deal with. Asking God for help is always the way to react. At least for me. Running to God for help is always…

Acts 14:14-18 17: but He never left them without evidence of Himself and His goodness. For instance, He sends you rain and good crops and gives you food and joyful hearts. There is evidence of God with us everywhere. As I sit outside with my morning tea, God is evident in the forces of nature that made the lakes, trees, sun, and moon that are all around me. The miracle of new life as seen in my great granddaughter. And yes, e ven in the wind and rain and storms. When I think of all these things, I see God’s hand in it all. This was on,y one of Paul’s arguments for belief in God. Of course, the story of Jes…
